A Look back on my Hair Journey

This month was to be my mini celebratory month of crossing the fourth year of my hair growth, it feels good to actually see the progress from up until that time. Four years ago I had my friend relax my hair, I had been using a no lye relaxer and decided to switch up to a regular strength relaxer that included lye. So from freshly relaxed hair growth to the tips of my older ends, my hair began to feel extremely dry.
The very next day, I started to experience shedding, by the end of the week a circular patch evolved at the base of my scalp near my neck, by this time I was feeling a slight hysteria, followed by the fact that I was still grieving over the passing of my mom. I called my friend who did the relaxer and she was at a loss and could not think where she had gone wrong, one of her rules was always to deep condition my hair after a relaxer, by that time I had reached a stillness inside. My hair was breaking off but I could still feel stubble where the patches had formed...
My "big chop" 2008

I wore a half wig that I had to work  and by the next week, most likely during Easter holidays, I'm not sure on dates my  two very good friends(they were a couple at the time), who I had met while at "uni" dragged me out of the house, to go river" liming" with them somewhere in Valencia and while there I asked her boyfriend to cut my hair, which he did very neatly with scissors while my (female) friend tried to talk me out of it...So the picture above was the result of that BC(big chop)!
The type of wig I wore to work

I wore wigs to work for quite a while and when my hair started to grow, my "uni" school friend offered to "cane row" my hair, holding on to what she could to sew on weave, and what she could not sew in she  glued! Its unfortunate I don't have much pictures of that time. My laptop I had at the time crashed and I returned it for repairs as I had the extended warranty, but after much ado..it was exchanged and all info, mostly pics were gone..some of these are photos I copied from friends
A month or so later I would wear my hair it out to hang out with
 friends
So for approximately two years I wore weave, and as it grew under my sometimes inconsistent care, eventually my friend moved further away, which led to me having my hair weaved at a salon. Then finally another friend who indulges in making her own home made wigs and doing braided hair styles offered to weave my hair, which she continued to do, even for me to follow in her own wedding
Friends wedding

Around that time I was introduced to Youtube by my brother  to view some controversial music video, and I created an account and forgot about it, but while surfing the net to read reviews on mineral makeup which was the "craze" at the time, I happened upon hair care for black women, this eventually led me to the "Kimmaytube channel" which is where I learned from her easy to understand videos on natural Hair Care which I adapted to suit me and the products actually available in my little island home of "Trinbago"

My first time flat ironing my hair since growing it out in
2011

This is the result,1 a lovely "poof" as soon as I was
 finished

April 2012

N.B.
On another personal note this blog was originally started through my excitement on getting my book "The Science Of Black Hair", it was to be the "dawning of a new era" in my life where I felt I would be able to share my hair experience, hence my user name Dawn, but so far I've not kept strictly to that road...however  in my mind, I've categorise my writings as more of a lifestyle blog, as for my name change, my first name is Anastasia, which for convenience I shortened to Ana for use here...anyway, hope everyone has a great weekend (^_^) xox

A water marble nail art tut. using pics ;c)

The water marble nail art look is probably, oh so last year for true nail "aficionado" but for myself and a couple of friends its a nice way to get that designer look without actually visiting the salon,so this was my day for experimenting!!
So here is what is needed

Items needed: nail polish (any brand of your choice)
                      scotch/masking/duct tape
                      scissors
                      plastic bowl
                      tooth pic
room temperature water (filtered tap or bottled water)
                      cotton buds and cotton
Should have taped up first!
Taped up after

Method:

  • Cut strips of tape and place along edges
  • Paint on your base coat to protect nail bed from staining and let dry
  • Paint nail in a neutral back ground colour which would allow marbled colours to pop e.g.white, black
You need to hold brush closer to water surface, when dropped
from height, heavier drops sank to the bottom

  • Add a droplet of your nail polish of choice and allow to spread, then add a droplet of another colour of your choice and allow to spread. Can several more colours to create a colour palette of your choice, but you also need to move fast

  1. Take toothpick and manipulate the colour pattern to your own choosing.
  2. Dip finger, move on to next nail
  3. When all nails are done let dry, remove tape and tidy up your edges
Need to work fast to prevent it forming into a "skin" on the
water surface

The smaller the container the smaller it would spread and the
brighter it would look on your nails
Used toothpick to create design

Before you pull out nail use cotton or cotton bud to clear water
surface

Can let dry and remove tape to clean up fingers
Finished look, unfortunately I got a few air bubbles,
will do better next try!

L.A. Girl creme lipstick

During the past few months or so I've been slowly coming to an awareness of my own shopping habits and today it hit me, that I'm a true hardcore Pennywise shopper, for everything from toiletries too makeup, hair products nails etc. and though I venture into the occasional  variety stores it really has been my main cosmetic store of choice, but lately it took me awhile to realise that I've finally submitted to the local craze of shopping at Wonderful World.
So stepping away from my usual view of Wonderful World  as a bra and accessories store with the occasional makeup I am only now paying attention to their variety of "affordable" cosmetic brands. As my mom used to say, if you have to start at the bottom try and build yourself a good base.
(L) Infatuated, (R) Pure Ecstasy

So this is my intro to LA Girl creme lipstick so i thought I would try at least two.. Pure Ecstasy LC545 and Infatuated LC 547 both lip sticks do glide on smoothly to the lips, but though they are creamy, for me its just not as pigmented as my NYX lip smackers, but like NYX they also have a relatively noticeable sweet scent.

GP338 Nectar

As for longevity, they are not going to last as long as a matte lipstick, which is what I usually go for, but at least its not as drying. I also purchased their retractable lip liner in Nectar, on the liner it states that its a "L.A,Girl endless Semi-permanent auto lip liner; long lasting everyday wear" it really did last well throughout my day and I did uses it to especially give life to my lips as the paler shade of Pure Ecstasy gave my lips a washed out look, but a touch of concealer and the liner made it a good match to my skin tone so the liner is a definite "fav". I did enjoy trying something different and I would definitely purchase other colours in their range again.

Just Chillin'..

So today was Friday 13th a.k.a. black Friday, today was the beginning of my financial freedom I finally closed off my regular credit card and switched to a prepaid visa card so that I can limit my spending and focus my attention on saving with my "boo", for that dream home...sigh!
It was also a day to wander around town, to see what was new, Wonderful World had a few sale items at greatly reduced prices, probably with the intention of restocking since there was limited selection on there lip colors but decided to try there LA Girl creme lippies, as for HairCity, a lot of there Nyx lip smackers had sold out, but I was still able to claim another two, Pennywise also seemed to be in need of restocking as far as their Jackelin collection, a friend had asked me to check for her favorite Berry red, which is still in hiding so I left their with just the basic toiletries.

Stopped off at one at my favorite book lending club in Curepe to see what was available...

Then decided to enjoy some "pomcythere chow" with a good friend of mine, this was given to me by another friend who picked this from a waist high tree?!!
This is mainly garlic, pimento, cucumbers sliced fine, touch of water and salt to taste.

Hope everyone's enjoying there Friday night, its work time for me tomorrow per usual
